We are looking for a bright and enthusiastic volunteer to assist with our Student Programme based in Kenya for the summer period. The successful applicant will be based in Kisumu, Western Kenya from Mid June to early September and will need experience of managing large groups of people. The role involves supporting the existing Student Coordinator in a variety of ways so the individual needs to be organised, flexible and able to take direction. They must be an excellent communicator, proactive and confident, ideally with an understanding of the social and economic context of sub-Saharan Africa. The KOP Student Programme runs for the whole of the summer period, hosting 200 (predominantly) medical students from all over the UK for a practical learning experience in developmental issues. Applicants will therefore need to be naturally, but sensitively, authoritative. Responsibilities will include: • Managing large groups of students on a pre-arranged programme • Providing any support or information requested by the student groups • Communicating with the Student Coordinator and following any direction/requests • Ensuring that any incidents, allegations or complaints made against volunteers are properly reported and managed, liaising with the Student Coordinator on any appropriate courses of action. • Working closely with local organisations • Representing the charity to all volunteers, beneficiaries and project partners • Reporting the loss or theft of valuables or money to the Student Coordinator who will record details of the incident and the outcome • Enforcing risk control measures • Observing for any behavioural changes in any of the groups or individuals.
